MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College women's basketball team struggled to slow down the Westminster Blue Jays as they fell to 70-48 in their home opener on Saturday evening at Mallory Gymnasium.
Rhodes struggled from the field all night, shooting 16 of 55 (29%) from the field and 4 of 21 (19%) from behind the arch. On the other side, the Blue Jays 41% from the field and controlled the boards, out rebounding the Lynx 52-32.
Westminster jumped out to 12-5 lead and extended that lead to 16-7 early in the first half. However, Rhodes began to find some offense as they finished the quarter on a 7-1 run behind five points from freshman
Kaelee Overfield and a layup from freshman
LaKyia Parker.
The second quarter proved to be a downer for Rhodes again as a 9-0 run gave Westminster a 29-16 lead midway through the quarter. The Blue Jays would out score the Lynx 16-7 in the quarter and would take a 33-21 lead at the break.
Westminster would extend that lead to 20 at the end of three, scoring 19 points in the quarter. Rhodes would fight to get the game down to 14 in the fourth quarter, but it ultimately would not be enough as they would fall 70-48.
Overfield had a career high 11 points including three 3-pointers while senior
Bailey Kramer had nine points and 10 boards. Parker and junior
Jessie Ustick each had six points while Ustick and sophomore
Allie Young each had five rebounds. Senior Blaire Smith had six assists in the contest and two steals. Young also had four blocks in the game.
Brooke Stauffer led Westminster with 14 points while Ali Perry had 13 points. Mirrakohl Johnson had 12 points while Andrea Zalis had 11 points.
Rhodes falls to 0-2 on the young season and will look to pick up their first win of the season on Sunday as they welcome in Rust College at 6 PM. The game could have a later start due to two men's games and one women's game scheduled before the Lynx game during the Rhodes Thanksgiving Classic.
