MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - In almost any sport, the last five minutes of the first half and the first five minutes of the second half can always make or break a game for a team. For the Rhodes College men's soccer team, it proved to be the backbreaker as they gave up one goal before the half and one goal early in the second half in a 2-1 defeat on Sunday afternoon.
Rhodes out shot the Vikings in the match, 14-12, though Berry was more on target with a 6-5 advantage. The Lynx also had a 9-7 lead in corner kicks on the afternoon.
Berry was strong in the first half, out shooting Rhodes 7-2, and getting a goal with less than two minutes before the break as Henry Arato was able to come away with a rebound off the goalkeeper for the one goal lead.
In the first five minutes of the second half, the Vikings found the second goal of the game as JT Kieffer scored to put Berry ahead 2-0 over the Lynx.
As Rhodes has proven all year long, they do not go away easily and a foul in the box in the 68th minute gave the Lynx a chance to cut the deficit in half. Junior
William Mitchell stepped up and ripped his seventh goal of the season to make it a 2-1 game.
However, despite a 12-5 advantage in shots in the second half, Rhodes could not find the equalizer as they fell to Berry by the score of 2-1.
Mitchell and junior
Garrett Durbin each led the offensive attack with three shots a piece while eight different Lynx got a shot off for Rhodes throughout the contest. Senior
Conner Tipton and sophomore
Davis Neitzschman each got a shot on target, but could not find a goal.
Freshman
Boe Santos got the start in net and finished with four saves on the afternoon. The Lynx fall to 4-7-1 overall and 1-3 in Southern Athletic Association play.
Rhodes will return home for Parents Weekend as they prepare to close their home regular season with a two game stretch. It all begins on Friday afternoon as they welcome rival Sewanee into Memphis for a 2 PM kickoff.
