MEMPHIS - Sophomore
George Winfrey struck a beautiful shot from 25 yards out in the 66th minute to give the Rhodes College men's soccer team a 1-0 lead and ultimately a huge win over the Sewanee Tigers on Saturday morning at the Rhodes Soccer Field.
In a game that got washed out on Friday and postponed to Saturday, the Lynx showed up ready to play and took it to the Tigers as they improved to 6-7-1 overall and 2-3 in the SAA.
Rhodes dominated possession throughout much of the match, frustrating the Tigers for nearly the entire match. The Lynx held a dominant 21-5 advantage in shots, but were actually even in shots on target with four. The Lynx also held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks for the match.
Though the two teams were scoreless through one period, Rhodes thoroughly dominated the match as they had an 11-1 advantage in shots and stifled any sort of attack Sewanee mustered up. Rhodes had a few outstanding hits, both in the first half and early in the second from juniors
William Mitchell and
Mark Robinson, but were denied by the crossbar and post.
Later in the second half, Mitchell fought for possession deep in Sewanee territory, just outside of the box and sent it back to Winfrey, who lofted one towards goal and just over the head of the Tigers goalkeeper for the one goal lead.
Despite an aggressive attack from Sewanee, Rhodes kept their foot on the gas pedal and even got some opportunities to push the lead to two. However, at the end of the day, a terrific defensive effort from the likes of junior
Matt McKeand, junior
Garrett Durbin, and freshman
Will Lawler was all the Lynx really needed to preserve the victory.
Mitchell sent seven shots off while McKeand had four and Robinson added two. Sophomore
Austin Ly was terrific throughout the afternoon in the midfield while sophomore goalkeeper
Patrick Wilkerson earned the win, picking up four saves in the process.
The Lynx, still in the hunt for a top four position at the SAA Championship, will wrap up their home schedule in the regular season as they welcome in Centre tomorrow at 12 PM with Senior Day festivities beginning around 11:45 AM. The Lynx will honor two seniors in
Conner Tipton and
Evan Wladis.
