MEMPHIS - With under a minute to go, junior
William Mitchell entered the box and sent a great ball to fellow junior
Mark Robinson who ripped the game winning goal past the Centre goalkeeper for a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon.
The Lynx celebrated two seniors,
Evan Wladis and
Conner Tipton, for Senior Day prior to the match and emotions were running high in the final home contest of the regular season. Rhodes moves to 7-7-1 overall and 3-3 in the SAA
In a game that was tightly contested from start to finish, Centre led Rhodes in shots at 16-14, but the Lynx held a 7-6 advantage in shots on target. Centre also had a slight edge in corner kicks at 7-6.
Both teams had some early opportunities in the first half as both goalkeepers came up with key saves. Centre had a couple of late opportunities in the half, but a pair of terrific saves by sophomore
Patrick Wilkerson kept the game scoreless.
Moments later, Robinson had two opportunities in the box, but both shots were saved by Centre's Bailey Spade as the match was scoreless after one half of play.
In the second half, Rhodes finally connected for the first goal of the game in the 61st minute. Robinson sent a long throw in into the box where it found the head of junior
Matt McKeand, and was followed up by freshman
Bowen Burdette for a one goal lead.
Eight minutes later, Centre had an answer as they used clever passing and a terrific hit from Brandon Schweder, just past the outstretched arms of Wilkerson to even the game.
In the final 20 minutes, both teams were even in shots with four a piece as each team continued to get opportunities to pull ahead in regulation. As the game crept closer to extra time, Rhodes begin late attack in the last two minutes.
From there, Robinson took the great pass from Mitchell and hit a perfect drive towards the upper far post, giving Spade no chance for a save, and sending the Rhodes bench and crowd into jubilation as they took a 2-1 lead.
Centre scrambled for one last attack at goal, but had nothing to show for as the clock struck zero and the Lynx earned a huge conference victory.
Wilkerson was outstanding in goal, finishing with seven saves on the afternoon. Rhodes also got a terrific effort from junior
Garrett Durbin and sophomore
George Winfrey defensively all afternoon. Burdette, Mitchell, McKeand, and Robinson were terrific in the attack while Wladis also got some great looks on target.
Rhodes is looking to eye a top four birth to host the first round of the SAA Championship two weeks from now. They are currently in a three way tie with Centre and Berry for the final spot. Birmingham-Southern, who Rhodes beat, is also just ahead of the pack at 3-2-1.Â
The Lynx will finish the season at Hendrix next weekend while BSC battles Millsaps, Berry takes on Oglethorpe, and Centre battles Sewanee. Rhodes can still finish as high as third and as low as sixth.
