Mitchell's Two Goals Lead Lynx Men to Win Over Hendrix and No. 3 Seed

CONWAY, Ark. - Junior William Mitchell scored a pair of goals and sophomore Patrick Wilkerson earned his third shutout of the year as the Rhodes College men's soccer team defeated the Hendrix Warriors 2-0 in the regular season finale to clinch the No. 3 seed in next week's SAA Tournament.

Oglethorpe defeated Berry while Millsaps defeated Birmingham-Southern earlier in the day to catapult the Lynx into the No. 3 seed. They will welcome in the Vikings of Berry next Saturday during Homecoming weekend with a tentative start time of 12 PM.

The Lynx were dominant all even, out shooting the Warriors 28-9 while also holding a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. Rhodes also held a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks on the evening.

Freshman Bowen Burdette jump started the offense early on as he sent a perfect ball through the middle of the defense, finding Mitchell who beat the Hendrix goal keeper one on one for a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.

Rhodes out shot Hendrix 12-3 in the first half, getting numerous opportunities to add on to the lead, but Hendrix was able to keep the Lynx at one as the game went to the break.

In the second half, Rhodes found their second goal of the game in the 54th minute to give themselves some cushion. Junior Matt McKeand intercepted a pass on the goal kick by Hendrix and beat the keeper, only to pass to a streaking Mitchell for his second goal of the game.

The Rhodes defense took over from there as Hendrix looked to find some opportunities down two goals. However, the Lynx defense led by junior defender Garrett Durbin, sophomore George Winfery, and freshman Will Lawler, kept the clamps on the Hendrix defense as Wilkerson picked up the shutout.

Wilkerson only needed to make two saves on the day thanks to the great defensive effort while Mitchell, McKeand, and seniors Evan Wladis and Conner Tipton led teh Lynx offense all evening.

The Lynx will prepare for a busy and exciting Homecoming Weekend. With the men's win, five Lynx athletic teams will be home and set to compete during Homecoming.
