MEMPHIS - Despite a tremendous week, the Rhodes College volleyball team could not make it a perfect weekend as they fell to the Birmingham-Southern Panthers in straight sets on Saturday afternoon at Mallory Gymnasium.
The loss drops Rhodes to 8-9 overall and 4-6 in conference while BSC moves to 14-3 overall and 7-1 in SAA play.
The Panthers were red hot all day in their attack, hitting .316 on the day with 45 kills to only eight errors. The Lynx were solid in their attack as well, finishing with 33 kills to only 18 errors on the day.
The Lynx could not slow down the hot hitting Panthers as they hit .433 and .378 in the first two sets while only making four total errors. There was not much Rhodes could do as they dropped both sets 25-16.
In the third set, Rhodes made a run to get back into the match as the match was at 17-16. The two teams exchanged points before the Panthers scored five straight points to take control of the match at 24-18. The Lynx responded with three straight points, but it was not enough as the Panthers closed the match with a 25-21 win.
Sophomore
Caroline Perlis led the way with eight kills while junior
Elasha Williams up six. Sophomore
Hannah McCarty had 15 assists while sophomore
Arati Joshi had 14.
Senior
Catherine Grimes had two service aces and led the defensive with 13 digs. Sophomore
Katherine Bolyard had 11 digs while McCarty added 10. Perlis led the team in blocks with four blocks while sophomores
Ellen Platt and
Lulu Schulz had two blocks.
Rhodes will hit the road next weekend as they will play three games in Georgia. The Lynx will play a doubleheader next Saturday in Atlanta as they take on Oglethorpe at 1 PM ET followed by a 3 PM matchup against Covenant on Oglethorpe's campus.
