ATLANTA, Ga. - The Rhodes College volleyball team held the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels to only 22 kills and a -.018 hititng percentage as they swept the Petrels on their home floor for a key SAA win on Saturday afternoon.
Rhodes was dominant throughout the match, finished with 38 kills to only 16 errors for a .212 hitting percentage. The Lynx led Oglethorpe in all categories including kills (38-22), aces (7-3), blocks (12-4), assists (37-21), and digs (56-49).
The Lynx played the opposite of how they played in Memphis earlier this year, jumping all over the Petrels and using a pair of 5-1 rallies to build a 19-12 lead. Rhodes closed the match by winning six of the final seven points to win the first set 25-14.
A back-and-forth second set found the match at 20-19 in favor of Rhodes. The Lynx would score four straight points behind a pair of kills by sophomore
August Bishop to go up 24-19 and close the set at 25-21.
Oglethorpe looked to pull what Rhodes pulled in their last matchup and try to win three straight sets, going up 13-10 in the third set. However, the Lynx were having none of that as seven straight points propelled Rhodes to a 17-13 lead as the Lynx took advantage of Petrel errors as well as kills from junior
Elasha Williams.
After Oglethorpe got a point back to make it 17-14, the Lynx went on another six point rally as Williams picked up five kills throughout the rally as Rhodes cruised to a 25-18 win to sweep the match. Williams would finish with seven kills in the set alone.
Sophomore
Ellen Platt led the attack with nine kills followed by Williams with eight. Sophomore
Hannah McCarty had 22 assists while sophomore
Arati Joshi added 10 for Rhodes. Sophomores
Caroline Perlis and
Lulu Schulz each had two service aces.
Defensively, Schulz had eight blocks while Perlis picked up three. Sophomore
Katherine Bolyard had 15 digs to lead the Lynx.
Rhodes would take on Covenant following the Oglethorpe match and fall 25-21, 25-19, 25-23. Williams led the way with eight kills and 12 digs, McCarty had 18 assists, while freshman
Sophia Quesada had 14 digs as Rhodes got many non-starters minutes in the non-conference match.
The Lynx are currently 9-10 overall and 5-6 in the SAA. They reutrn to action tomorrow afternoon as they take on Berry College at 2 PM ET.
