MEMPHIS - After a huge win over the top team in the SAA, the Rhodes College volleyball team kept the momentum going forward as they defeated the Millsaps College Majors in four sets on Friday evening at Mallory Gymnasium.
The Lynx out hit the Majors with 54 kills to 23 errors and a hitting percentage of .200. Rhodes was terrific defensively again, taking advantage of the Majors' mistakes as they hit -.019 with 30 kills to 33 errors.
Rhodes was off to a slow start as they fell behind in the first set 15-9. The Lynx would charge back to make it to tie the set at 24, but the Majors scored the final two points to win the match 26-24.
From there, it was all Lynx as they were completely dominant in the next three sets.
Rhodes was dominant in set two, leading 11-3 early on behind a monster effort from sophomore
Katherine Bolyard, who had four kills in the run. Sophomores
Ellen Platt and
Lulu Schulz also added kills during the set.
The Majors came back to make it 11-8, but Rhodes would score six straight point to pull ahead 17-8 and eventually cruise to a 25-19 win.
In set three, Millsaps took an early 4-1 lead, but the Lynx would go on to out score the Majors 20-6 and eventually win set three 25-11. Rhodes kept that momentum into the final set, leading 7-2 and pushing it out to 12-5 as they closed the match with a 25-13 win.
Bolyard was excellent with 15 kills while Platt added nine and freshman
Heather Antrim tacked on nine. Sophomore
Hannah McCarty had 29 assists while
Arati Joshi added 14. Schulz and senior
Catherine Grimes each finished with two service aces.
Defensively, junior
Elasha Williams had 20 digs while Grimes added 19 and Bolyard had 14. Schulz finished with nine blocks on the evening, Platt had seven, and sophomore
Caroline Perlis had five.
With the win, Rhodes made it two in a row to go to 8-8 overall and 4-5 in the SAA. They look to keep it going tomorrow afternoon as they welcome in Birmingham-Southern for a home clash at 12 PM.
