MEMPHIS - Behind a three goal second half, the Rhodes College men's soccer team blew open a 2-1 lead to pull away and defeat the Williams Baptist Eagles by the score of 5-1 on Monday afternoon at the Rhodes Soccer Fields. The win moves the Lynx to 4-5-1 overall.
The two teams were actually even in shots throughout the afternoon. The athletic Eagles out shot the Lynx 19-18 including a 9-8 advantage in shots on target, but Rhodes made their looks on goal count in the scoring outburst.
It did not take long for Rhodes to jump out on front as sophomore
George Winfrey sent a great cross to freshman
Will Lawler who finished for the 1-0 lead. Just eight minutes later, junior
Matt McKeand found sophomore
Davis Neitzschman, who picked up his second straight goal in as many games, to give the Lynx a two goal lead.
Rhodes looked dominant for most of the first half, but Williams Baptist began to find some opportunities and started to make some moves on goal. The Eagles cut the deficit in half in the 38th minute as Danilo Cruz made it a one goal game going into the break.
In the second half, Williams Baptist looked to even the score throughout the first 20 minutes, but the Rhodes defense held strong to their one goal lead. The Lynx used a 10 miunte span to break the game wide open beginning in the 63rd minute as junior
William Mitchell scored on a beautiful assist from sophomore
Austin Ly to extend the lead to 3-1.
Just five minutes later, freshman
Evan McMann sent a well hit cross to junior
Mark Robinson to go up by three. Robinson struck again five minutes later, but this time on a throw in as he found the foot of freshman
Nick Isolani to go ahead 5-1.
The rout was on as Rhodes was able to play many bodies on Monday afternoon in the decisive win. Robinson had a goal and an assist while five different Lynx scored and provided an assist.
Despite not getting on the scoring card, Rhodes got great efforts from junior
Garrett Durbin, senior
Conner Tipton, and sophomore
Michael Combs. The likes of freshmen
Bowen Burdette and
Quinn Ritchie were also key off the bench.
Sophomore
Patrick Wilkerson got the start in goal, finishing with four saves in the contest, while freshman
Jaimin Patel played the second half and finished with four saves as well.
The Lynx will prepare for a tough roadtrip to Georgia as they prepare to take on Oglethorpe on Friday night in Atlanta at 7 PM ET.
