MEMPHIS - After a first half goal from junior
Emma Selner, the Rhodes College women's soccer team went on to score three more goals in the second half as they routed the Birmingham-Southern Panthers to the tune of 4-1 in a conference matchup.
Rhodes moves to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in conference and has now won four games in a row. Meanwhile, BSC falls to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the SAA.
Rhodes was dominant in the match as they controlled possession for most of the match. They out shot the Panthers 15-7 including a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. They were especially impressive in earning corner kicks, which proved to be a difference maker, earning 10 on the day to BSC's two.
Selner would strike in the 27th minute as sophomore
Sydnie Schindler, who just came on, found Selner who found an opening just ouside of the box and ripped a shot into the back of the net for lead going into the break.
Just four mintues into the second half, Schindler scored to extend the lead. Four minutes after that, senior
Elise Grisoni got in on the action to make it a 3-0 lead for Rhodes. For Grisoni, it is her team leading sixth goal of the season. Senior
Nicolette Glidden had a hand in each goal, picking up two assists.
The Lynx weren't done quite yet as sophomore
Rachel Coyle was finally able to find the back of the net for her first goal of the season as Rhodes was cruising at 4-0.
The Panthers were able to squeak a goal in at the 68th minutes, but Rhodes cruised from there to a three goal victory.
The Lynx defense continues to play impressively led by senior
Kelsey Sweeney, senior
Sarah Wachter, and junior
Ellie Valega. Rhodes also got contributions to a pair of freshmen in
Carly Cone and Taylor Curtis.
Meanwhile the Rhodes attack is at its peak right now, scoring 19 goals in their four game winning streak. Schindler and Grisoni have been major keys in scoring, but the Lynx have gotten tremendous games from Selner, Glidden, and junior
Hope Elliott. Senior
Angie Hurlow and freshmen
Jenny Neil and
Katelyn Curtis have also been key.
Junior
Anna Maldonado played 72 minutes, picking up two saves in the win, while sophomore
Olivia Marshall added a save in the final 17 minutes.
Rhodes is back in action next weekend for a tough road trip to Georgia. They open it up in Atlanta with a 5 PM ET match up against Oglethorpe University.
