MEMPHIS - Sophomore
Davis Neitzschman scored in the 62nd minute in the lone goal of the game as the Rhodes College men's soccer team earned their first conference win of the season, defeating the Birmingham-Southern Panthers at home, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon.
Rhodes moves to 3-5-1 overall and 1-1 in the Southern Athletic Association while BSC falls to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the SAA.
In a great back-and-forth, even contest, the Panthers held a close 10-9 advantage in shots with four on target from each side. BSC also had the advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon at 8-3.
In the first half, Birmingham-Southern was able to get off six shots to Rhodes' two, but sophomore
Patrick Wilkerson was terrific in goal, coming up with a few huge saves to keep the game scoreless. Rhodes also got tireless efforts from the likes of junior
Garrett Durbin and sophomore
George Winfrey.
In the second half, Winfrey lined up a shot from outside the box that deflected off a Panther defender and to the feet of Neitzschman who sent a bullet of a shot by the goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.
From there, the Lynx continued to hold strong defensively while out shooting BSC in the second half, 10-9. Rhodes got excellent individual efforts from sophomore
Austin Ly, senior
Evan Wladis, and junior
Michael Combs to stay in front. Junior
Matt McKeand came off the bench and provided a great spark for the defense throughout the match.
It was the first shutout of the season as the defense, and especially Wilkerson, had a big part in that as they limited a very talented Panther offense throughout the game, frustrating them at times.
For the Lynx, it is a huge win both in terms of conference record and confidence factor going forward. They will look to ride that momentum in a non-conference tilt on Monday afternoon as they welcome in Williams Baptist at 4 PM.
