Field Hockey Erases Two Goal Deficit; Wins Thriller in Overtime

MEMPHIS - Despite a 2-0 deficit against archrival Sewanee, the Rhodes College field hockey team rallied to tie the game at two in regulation, and would win the match on a goal from senior Erin Best with less than a minute remaining in the overtime period for a 3-2 SAA win.

Rhodes moves to 9-1 on the season and 3-0 in conference play. Sewanee, despite a valiant effort in which they were overmatched, falls to 3-6 and 0-2 in SAA play.

Despite the close match, Rhodes dominated in every facet of the game, out shooting Sewanee 36-6 including 29 goals on target. The Lynx also had an astonishing 30 penalty corners to Sewanee's two.

However, it was the Tigers who struck first just nine minutes into the match, taking advantage of a defensive mishap as Katie Wilson put the Tigers up 1-0.

Midway through the second half, Sewanee struck again as Hannah Tompkins was there for the put back on a Laura Eckelkamp save to go ahead by two goals.

The Lynx, stunned, began the move to even the score. Despite numerous close opportunities to get on the board, Rhodes finally broke through with five minutes remaining in the half as sophomore Maddie Smith scored a beautiful one time goal from fellow sophomore Jillian Chistensen. That goal proved to be huge going into the break.

Rhodes played in Sewanee's half of the field for nearly the entire second half, getting off 17 shots to the Tigers' one. But some unlucky breaks combined with some goals called back kept the game at 2-1 with less than seven minutes to go.

However, Christensen would strike with a beautiful that found the back of the net and evened the game at two, sending the crowd into jubilation. Neither team could find the go-ahead goal in regulation as the game went into overtime.

Both teams would have opportunities in the extra frame as the game shrinks to 7-on-7. Both Eckelkamp and Sewanee's Katya Waters made huge stops while the defenses held firm throughout most of the 15 minutes period.

With under a minute to play and a corner for Rhodes, freshman Hailey Mules sent it to Christensen who found Best for the game winning goal to keep Rhodes perfect in conference play and move their winning streak to six.

Christensen was outstanding, finishing with one goal and two assists in the contest while Smith and Best added the other goals. The forward of senior Christina DiFelice, junior Lauren Travis, and sophomore Lizzie Wood continued their outstanding play as of late.

After some early lapses, the Rhodes defense really stepped up going forward as they shut down Sewanee's offense, limiting them to little to no attack throughout the game. The Lynx got outstanding play from sophomore Abby Rockefeller, senior Mackenzie Busby, freshman Daryl Perry, and Smith. Eckelkamp finished with four saves on the afternoon.

Rhodes will take Monday off, but return to action on Monday night as they go down the road to Conway, Ark. for a SAA matchup against Hendrix at 7 PM.
