Catherine Eckert scored 14 points, and sophomore
Erin Deery scored 11 off the bench as the Rhodes College women's basketball team earned their first Southern Athletic Association victory of the season over Centre College, 68-62.
Rhodes shot 25-for-58 (43.1%) from the field and 9-for-17 (52.9%) from deep. The Lynx outrebounded the Colonels, 33-31, and won the turnover battle over the Colonels, 12-9. Rhodes was especially good in points off turnovers, finishing with 18 points, while Centre only scored nine off turnovers.
The two teams were deadlocked at 14 after one quarter, but Centre would take a small lead at 26-23 midway through the second quarter. However, Rhodes would go on a 10-0 run thanks to a pair of 3's from Deery and two baskets in the paint by junior
Bailey Kramer. Centre would end the run with a basket before the half, but Rhodes would hold the 33-28 advantage at the break.
Centre would start the the third quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 34-33 lead, but Rhodes would finish the quarter by outscoring the Colonels, 11-3, thanks to another big quarter from Deery, scoring five in the third.
The duo of Daniels and Eckert began to take over in the fourth quarter while freshman
Sara Giesen added a three pointer to push their lead to 52-41. Centre would push back, moving within five numerous times, but Rhodes would answer everytime, earning the huge road win, 68-62.
Daniels added seven rebounds, three assists, one steal, and one block to her terrific evening while Deery shot 3-for-5 from deep. Kramer finished with nine points, 12 rebounds, and four steals on the night. Sophomore
Jessie Ustick added six points off the bench while senior
Hannah Orth pitched in five points.
With her 15 points, Daniels eclipsed 1,000 points for her career. She becomes the 16th student-athlete in Rhodes women's basketball history to eclipse this milestone.
For Centre, Alexis Guy led the way with 13 points while Kaitlyn McKnight added 12 points.
Rhodes moves to 7-6 on the season and 1-1 in the SAA. Rhodes will return to action on Sunday as they travel to Sewanee, Tenn. to battle their rivals, the University of the South. Tipoff is set for 1 PM ET/12 PM CT.
