Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lynx Women Can't Figure Out Millsaps Defense

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College women's basketball team was unable to solve a tough Millsaps College defense as they saw their three-game winning streak come to a halt, falling 54-44 on Sunday afternoon at Mallory Gymnasium.

Rhodes shot 18-for-57 (31.6%) from the field and 4-for-17 (23.5%) from deep while only getting to the free throw line eight times. Meanwhile, Millsaps also struggled from the field, going 18-for-56 (32.1%) and 4-for-18 (22.2%) from deep. However, the Majors were able to get to the free throw line 18 times.

The Majors dominated the boards, outrebounding Rhodes, 45-37, while both teams had 22 turnovers on the afternoon. The Majors owned a 29-21 advantage in points off turnovers, a 24-18 advantage in points in the paint, and a 19-10 advantage in bench points.

It was a rather ugly first quarter as both teams combined for 19 turnovers while neither team could hit any shots. However, Millsaps would hold a 7-2 lead. Rhodes got a bucket from senior Hannah Orth and a three from senior Catherine Eckert as they trailed 9-7. Millsaps closed the quarter strong, going to work in the paint to lead 13-7 after one.

In the second, a 7-2 run put Millsaps on top 20-9 as they continued to give Rhodes fits thanks to their ball pressure. However, Rhodes responded with a 9-0 run thanks to buckets from Orth, Eckert, freshman Danielle Summers, and senior Symone Daniels. As the Lynx cut the deficit to two, Millsaps answered with an 8-0 run and pushed the lead back out to 10.

Four straight points from junior Blaire Smith closed the half strong and gave Rhodes a more manageable deficit at the break, down 28-24.

In the third quarter, Eckert and sophomore Erin Deery connected on 3-pointers and suddenly the Lynx had tied the game at 30. However, Millsaps' full court pressure turned Rhodes possessions into turnovers as the Majors outscored the Lynx 11-4 the rest of the quarter for a 41-34 lead.

In the fourth, Rhodes could only get as close as six points in the final two minutes, but it would not be enough as Millsaps used free throws to close out the game and leave Memphis with a big conference victory.

Eckert led the way for Rhodes with 17 points including six rebounds, three steals, two blocks, and two assists. Smith would add eight points, four boards, and four assists. Daniels had two steals and three assists while Deery also added three assists.

For Millsaps, Beverly Holmes led the way with 13 points and four steals while Kim Klunk scored 12 points off the bench while pulling down eight rebounds.

Rhodes concludes their five game home stand and will prepare to hit the road for the first time since January 10th. The Lynx move to 10-9 overall and 4-4 in SAA play. They will visit "The Blacktop" for the first time as they take on Oglethorpe at 6 PM ET/5 PM CT on Friday. The two teams met last weekend in Memphis with Rhodes winning, 70-52.
