Lynx Women Catch Fire from Downtown to Knock Off Oglethorpe

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College women's basketball team shot 7-for-17 (41.2%) from deep, connecting on six three's in the first half to blow by the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels, 70-52, snapping a two game skid.

The Lynx shot well from the floor, going 24-for-51 (47.1%) and 15-for-20 (75.0%) from the charity stripe while holding the Stormy Petrels to 22-for-61 (36.1%) from the field and 3-for-10 (30%) from deep. The Lynx forced 21 turnovers on the evening despite turning it over 22 times. Rhodes also outrebounded Oglethorpe, 40-31 as well as 20 points from the bench.

The Lynx jumped out to a 10-3 lead as four of the five starters got on the board early on. Senior Hannah Orth scored the next five points for the Lynx offensively as they pushed their lead to 15-5. Oglethorpe closed the quarter with five straight points as Rhodes led 15-10.

A 21-6 run to start the second quarter gave Rhodes a 34-16 lead thanks to strong work in the paint from senior Symone Daniels and a pair of three's from Orth. Oglethorpe tried to closed the gap to 14, but a late three from way downtown from freshman Breana Hunt gave the Lynx a 37-20 lead at the break.

Rhodes went cold to start the second half as Oglethorpe went on a 11-4 run to cut the deficit down to 10. Rhodes would push it back out to 12, but an 8-0 run from the Stormy Petrels made it a four point game. After a pair of free throws at the end of the quarter from sophomore Erin Deery, Rhodes found themselves in a battle, up 47-41.

In the fourth, a layup from junior Bailey Kramer and a three from Deery pushed the lead to 11 almost immediately. From there, Rhodes would dominate the quarter and hold Oglethorpe scoreless in the final three minutes for the big win.

Senior Catherine Eckert led all scorers with 17, including 7-for-7 from the charity stripe, while Daniels pitched in 11 points, six rebounds, and six steals. Orth scored 11 off the bench while Deery scored 10. Kramer had nine points and a team-leading 10 boards. She also led the way in assists with three.

For Oglethorpe, Lauren Ransom led the way with 13 points and six rebounds while Emily Buck added 10 points.

Rhodes improves to 8-8 on the season and 2-3 in Southern Athletic Association play. They return to action on Sunday as they welcome in Berry College at 1 p.m.
