Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lynx Comeback Effort Falls Short in Loss to Oglethorpe

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College men's basketball team trailed by as many as 18 in the second half to the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels, but a huge rally in the second half, thanks in part to three's from junior Andrew Lowrie, gave the Lynx late lead. However, Oglethorpe prevailed, earning the road victory over the Lynx, 66-63.

The Petrels were red hot all game, shooting 24-for-45 (53.3%) from the field and 8-for-23 (34.8%) from downtown. Rhodes meanwhile caught fire late, shooting 24-for-54 (44.4%) overall from the field and 6-for-23 (26.1%) from three. The Lynx forced Oglethorpe into 20 turnovers on the night while only turning it over 14 times. They were outrebounded by the Stormy Petrels, 30-28.

After leading 11-7 early on, Rhodes would struggle as Oglethorpe began to heat up. With the game tied at 15, Oglethorpe went on a 7-0 run to take a 22-15 lead. The Lynx got it to five at 28-23, but Oglethorpe went on an 8-0 run to go up 36-23. Rhodes would finish the half with a three pointer to break the run and manage their deficit at 10 going into halftime.

In the second half, the Stormy Petrel offense was clicking on all cylinder, moving their lead out to 18. A quick 7-0 run from the Lynx got it back down to 11, but Oglethorpe  pushed it right back out to 53-35, with a little over 12 minutes to go in the game.

The Lynx, again, steadily kept pushing, going on a 10-0 runt o make it an eight point game with eight minutes remaining.

However, Oglethorpe answered again, this time with a mini 6-0 run to go back up by 14. With five to go, Rhodes made one final push to try and steal a victory.

After layups in the post from juniors Daniel Galvin and Tyler Gee, Lowrie caught fire, hitting three straight three's to make it a one point game. On the very next play, junior Brennan Sullivan came up with a steal and laid it in to cap a 15-0 run and give Rhodes a 60-59 lead.

Seconds later, Oglethorpe responded with a layup from George Andino to take the lead back with 1:30 remaining. Galvin answered on the other end with a layup in the post and a pair of missed free throws gave Rhodes the ball back with 1:09 to play.

After running the shot clock, a bad pass resulted in a steal for Chase Wardlaw who flushed it home on the fastbreak to give the Stormy Petrels a 63-62 lead. Meanwhile, Rhodes could not convert on the other end with 23 seconds to go.

The Rhodes defense would step up, forcing a five second call on the inbounds play, but a three from the Lynx would fall short and Rhodes would eventually fall, 66-63.

Galvin led the way with 19 points and six rebounds while Sullivan added 17 points, seven rebounds, and four steals.Lowrie came off the bench with 13 points and two steals while freshman Daniel Darst was terrific off the bench with five points, six boards, four assists, and two steals.
