MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College men's basketball team outscored the Berry Vikings, 39-25, in the first half and scored 47 in the second half en route to an 86-66 win over the team that came into today's game ranked No. 2 in the Southern Athletic Association.
In a game that saw 67 fouls called and 91 total free throws taken, Rhodes finished the afternoon shooting 21-for-49 (42.9%) from the field and 9-for-23 (39.1%) from downtown. They went 35-for-51 (68.6%) from the charity stripe. The Lynx defense was stellar, shooting 18-for-55 (32.7%) and 3-for-13 (23.1%) from three, and forcing 21 Viking turnovers. One of the key stats to the game was points off turnovers, as Rhodes outscored Berry, 30-6, in that department.
Juniors
Brennan Sullivan,
Andrew Lowrie, and
Keyshawn Butts began the game with three straight three pointers for an early 9-2 lead. The Lynx pushed that lead to 15-4 as juniors
Daniel Galvin and
Tyler Gee got on the board for all five starters to enter the scoring column in the first four minutes.
The Lynx pushed their lead to 24-10 thanks to excellent bench play from sophomore
Ian Harrison and freshman
Daniel Darst. After Berry made it 24-12, Rhodes went on a 7-0 run thanks to three ball from Lowrie and buckets from Butts and Harrison for a 31-12 lead with under eight minutes to play in the half.
The Lynx then went into a shooting drought, as they would not score against until a little less than three minutes to go. During that span, Berry was only able to move within 14 points. The two teams would finish out even for the rest of the half as Rhodes took a 39-25 lead at the break.
In the second half, a total of 43 fouls were called including four technical fouls as they game slowed to a crawl. Rhodes remained composed and used the free throw line to maintain and increase their lead, going 29-for-39 from the stripe. Berry only got as close as 15 points as the Lynx pulled away to earn their third Southern Athletic Association win of the year.
Four Lynx finished in double figures led by Lowrie, who finish with 17 points including five 3's, which both are career-highs. Sullivan added 16 points including an impressive 13-for-16 from the free throw line. Darst added 15 and six boards while Butts chipped in 10. Gee had an incredible all around game, going for eight points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, two blocks, and a steal. Galvin and junior
JJ Weir led the way defensively with three steals while Lowrie, Sullivan, and Butts all added two stels each. Harrison had five blocks, a career-high.
For Berry, Lee McCloud had 14 points while Owen Jacobs had 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Rhodes continues their five game home stand on Friday as they welcome in the Birmingham-Southern Panthers, currently the No. 1 team in the SAA. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. at Mallory Gymnasium.
