Daniel Galvin matched his career-high in points with 28 on 10-of-13 shooting while junior
Brennan Sullivan poured in 21 points as the Rhodes College men's basketball team outscored the Hendrix Warriors, 40-29, in the second half for a big 66-60 home win on Saturday evening.
Rhodes shot 19-for-47 (40.4%) from the field and 6-for-17 (35.3%) from deep, holding off a hot shooting Hendrix team that shot 47.9% from the field. The Lynx forced 15 turnovers while only giving it up 12 times and outrebounded the Warriors, 34-27.
In the first half, Hendrix was 13-for-21 (61.9%) from the field while Rhodes only went 8-for-25 (32.0%). However, Rhodes was able to stay in the by forcing nine Warrior turnovers.
Hendrix would jump ahead 16-6 and move it out to 25-13 midway through the half. The Warriors would lead 29-17 later in the half when Rhodes began to climb back into game, going on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to three. A jumper at the buzzer by Drew Nikolovski ended the run and gave Hendrix a 31-26 advantage at the break.
In the second half, Hendrix maintained their lead, moving it out to 35-28 at the 18:04 mark. Rhodes would go on a monster 17-0 run including three's from Sullivan, Galvin, and junior
Andrew Lowrie. Rhodes was on fire and in the span of five minutes, turned a seven point deficit into a 10 point lead.
But the Warriors bounced right back, going on an 11-1 run of their own to tie the game at 46. The two teams would exchange buckets for a 49-49 draw with under five minutes to go.
After a few defensive stops, freshman
Daniel Darst connected on a huge three from the corner to put Rhodes up by three. The two teams would exchange buckets back-and-forth as Galvin and Sullivan began to light up the scoreboard while Darst made huge plays for the Lynx.
With under two minutes remaining and the game tied at 60, Darst would hit a huge off-balanced layup to put Rhodes up for good, 62-60. The Lynx used strong defense to shut the Warriors out in the final two minutes while Sullivan iced the game at the free throw line for the 66-60 victory.
Galvin scored 14 in each half while pulling down five boards. Sullivan connected three times from downtown while Darst added seven points and four boards to go with two steals. Junior
Tyler Gee added six points, 11 rebounds, and five assists.
John Ogle led the Warriors with 24 points, three steals, and a block while Nikolovski had 12 points.
Rhodes moves to 8-7 overall and 2-2 in Southern Athletic Association play. The Lynx will return to Mallory Gymnasium on Friday as they welcome in Oglethorpe University at 8 PM.
