Rhodes Picks Up Draw Against Ozarks

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College men's soccer team wrapped up the Volgas Memorial Tournament with a draw against the University of Ozarks on Sunday afternoon at the Rhodes Soccer Complex.

In the first half, the Lynx were at an 8-4 disadvantage in shots, but held the lead going into break as junior Evan Wladis sent a beautiful ball into freshman Davis Neitzschman found the back of the net for his first career goal to give Rhodes a 1-0 advantage in the 24th minute.

In the second half, the Lynx looked to hold on defense and get out with their first win of 2015; however, the Eagles struck for a goal in the 73rd minute as Bryce Young knotted the score and the match would go into overtime.

Both teams aggressively sought the game winning goal, but neither could come up with it as the game ended in a draw.

Though the Lynx were out shot 17-8 in the box score, they were able to create opportunities on the Ozarks end of the field despite the lower shot total. Neitzschman led the way with two shots on the day while an array of Lynx were able to add their name to the shot column.

Freshman Patrick Wilkerson was excellent in goal, playing in the first 45 minutes and finishing with five saves. Senior Riley Sheen would play the final 65 minutes and finish with four saves on the afternoon.

The Lynx move to 0-1-1 on the season and will return home the following weekend as they will host the Rhodes Classic on Saturday and Sunday. Illinois College, Piedmont College, and Hendrix College will all be on hand for the event. The Lynx will battle Illinois College on Saturday at 2 p.m. followed by a matchup against Piedmont College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
