Field Hockey Falls to Roanoke in Overtime

SALEM, Va. - The Rhodes College field hockey team returned to action in Salem on Sunday morning as they took on the Roanoke College Maroons. The Lynx took an early lead in the first half; however, a late goal from the Maroons forced overtime where Roanoke was able to earn a 2-1 victory.

It only took a little over a minute for the Lynx to go up 1-0 as sophomore Lauren Travis found an opening on the right side for the early lead.

Rhodes continued to be the aggressor throughout both halves, taking a total of 16 shots on the afternoon and 13 on target while outshooting Roanoke 16-6. Rhodes also held a 7-2 advantage in corners throughout the game.

Despite outshooting Roanoke 9-1 in the second half, the Maroons made their one shot count as Emily McQueen scored with three minutes remaining to tie the game. McQueen would score three minutes into overtime to secure the victory from Roanoke.

Travis led the offensive attack with six shots in the contest including five on target. Junior Mackenzie Busby added three shots while junior Christina DiFelice took two. Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Eckelkamp came away with three saves in the contest.

Rhodes falls to 5-4 overall and have now lose three straight contests. They will return to Mason Field next weekend and look to get back on track as they welcome in Hendrix College for a Southern Athletic Association matchup at 12 p.m. It will also be Parents Weekend all throughout the campus.
