Men's Soccer Opens Conference with Wild Draw

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College men's soccer team opened up Southern Athletic Association play on Saturday afternoon as they welcomed in the Hendrix Warriors to the Rhodes Soccer Complex. In a wild contest, the Lynx and Warriors played to a 3-3 draw including five total goals in the second half.

In the first half, both teams exchanged possessions and had opportunities to put their team on top early on. In the 32nd minute, sophomore Mark Robinson had a beautiful side throw in into the box where sophomore Matt McKeand was able to find the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Rhodes would go on to outshoot the Warriors, 7-4, throughout the first half, and would take their one goal lead into the break.

However, the first 15 minutes were dominated by Hendrix as they were able to find some offense, scoring two goals in the 53rd and 58th for a one goal lead.

The Lynx would go back on the attack, but the Warriors would hold, getting some fantastic saves from their goalkeeper, Nathan Myers.

In the 78th minute, freshman Austin Ly would send a beautiful ball to a streaking Evan Wladis who was able to beat Myers and equalize the match at two.

It only took four minutes for Rhodes to take a 3-2 lead in a play almost identical to the first half. Again, Robinson had another great side throw into the box and McKeand was able to get a head on it to score his second goal of the game.

In a mad scramble towards the end of the game, Jacob Pierce was able to score a goal with two seconds remaining to tie the game back up at three and send the match into overtime.

Rhodes would dominate the first extra frame, taking three shots to none. In the second frame, Hendrix had a few opportunities, but senior Riley Sheen made some huge saves to keep the game tied. Eventually, the final whistle would blow and the game would end in a draw.

The Lynx out shot Hendrix, 25-19, with 16 of their shots on target. Rhodes was able to get 14 shots off in the second half as they tried to claw back into the match.

McKeand led the offensive attack with nine shots including his two goals while Robinson had two assists. Ly added five shots and an assist while Wladis and junior Connor Tiptin each had three shots. Defensively, Sheen had six saves in the contest, playing the full match.

Rhodes moves to 3-3-2 overall and 0-0-1 in SAA play. The Lynx will return home on Sunday as they will welcome Fisk University in for a non-conference contact. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. at the Rhodes Soccer Complex.
