SALEM, Va. - The Rhodes College field hockey team hit the road on Saturday afternoon as they took on the 16th-ranked Christopher Newport Captains. The Captains scored two goals in the first half while the Lynx could not respond on the offensive end, falling 2-0.
The Captains would strike for their two goals throughout the 20 minute mark as Madison Doss scored with around 15 minutes remaining and Alexa Weaver followed that up eight minutes later.
Despite the 2-0 deficit, Rhodes was able to get four shots off in the first half while CNU took six. The Lynx turned up the pressure in the second half, outshooting Christopher Newport, 5-4, but could not find a goal to get back into the match.
Rhodes held the advantage in corners, earning 16 in the match to the Captain's 10. Rhodes had 11 corner in the second half alone.
Individually, senior
Mary Rose Hazel led the offensive attack with five shots including three shots on goal. The quartet of senior
Evy Royther, junior
Christina DiFelice, and sophomore
Maddie Smith and
Georgie Wilkins all had a shot in the contest as well. In goal, sophomore
Laura Eckelkamp had five saves in her outing.
Rhodes falls to 5-3 and have lost their last two matches. They will look to rebound on Sunday morning as they will remain in Salem and will take on the homestanding Roanoke Maroons.
