MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College volleyball team returned to Mallory Gym on Sunday afternoon as they welcomed in the Centre College Colonels in Southern Athletic Association play. The Lynx were able to take a set, but the Colonels were too much, taking the match in four sets.
In the three matches the Lynx lost, they hit .000 or lower at a team and committed at least eight errors. However, in the set they won, they hit an impressive .270, finishing with 16 kills to only six errors. On the other side, Centre finished with a team hitting percentage of .132. Rhodes actually finished with more kills than the Colonels, but committed 13 more errors.
In the first set, the Lynx held a 19-17 lead as they looked to get off to a great start. However, Centre went on to win the next seven points, thanks in part to four attack errors by Rhodes. The Colonels would win the first set, 25-21.
Centre would carry that momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 10-3 lead and cruising to a 25-14 win in the second set.
The Lynx would not go down quietly, taking a 6-3 lead early in the third set and pushing their lead out to 17-11 as junior
Catherine Grimes, sophomore
Gabby Gafford, and freshman
Lulu Schulz provided a spark. Centre would rally to make it 18-17, but the Lynx were too much in this set, winning four straight points en rout to a 25-19 win.
It would not be enough though as the Colonels jumped out to a 10-2 lead and moved it out to 22-11. The Lynx would try to battled back, getting within six points, but Centre would put it away and win the match, 25-17.
Gafford and Grimes led the attack offensively with seven kills while Schulz and sophomore
Elasha Williams added six a piece. Freshman
Ana McMullen added 24 assists while freshman
Arati Joshi had 12. Senior
Maraia Tremarelli had 25 digs to go with four service aces while Grimes had 14 digs. Freshman
Morgan Hill earned four blocks while Grimes, freshman
August Bishop, and freshman
Caroline Perlis all had two.
Rhodes falls to 5-8 overall and 0-3 in SAA play. The Lynx will return to action this weekend as they welcome in Millsaps College on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Birmingham-Southern College on Sunday at 1 p.m. for conference matchups.
