MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College volleyball team opened up Southern Athletic Association player on Wednesday evening as they welcomed in the defending SAA champion, Hendrix Warriors, to Mallory Gymnasium. Errors proved to be costly for the Lynx as they would fall, 3-0, to the Warriors.
Rhodes goes to 5-5 on the season and 0-1 in SAA play while Hendrix moves to 6-5 on the year and 1-0 in conference play.
The Lynx stood toe-to-toe with the Warriors throughout the first set, hitting .158 with 10 kills and four errors committed. The two teams would battle back-and-forth, but a three point rally pushed Hendrix's lead out to 23-18 where they were able to hold off the Lynx and take the 25-21 victory. The Warriors hit very well in the first set with 17 kills to only five errors.
Rhodes came out firing to start the second set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. However, the Lynx would take advantage of errors by the young Rhodes team and go on an 8-1 run to retake the lead at 9-6. From there, the Warriors took advantage of 10 errors by the Lynx in the second set to win the second set, 25-16.
The Lynx looked to bounce back in the third set, but the Warriors were too strong, hitting .243 as a team in the final set to close the match at 25-17.
Freshman
August Bishop continues to impressive in her rookie season, leading the Rhodes attack with nine kills. Sophomore
Elasha Williams added six kills on the evening while freshman
Ana McMullen had 16 assists.
Defensively, senior
Maraia Tremarelli had 18 digs in the matchup while McMullen added 14. Freshman
Caroline Perlis had four blocks on the evening while freshman
Ellen Platt and Williams each had three.
For Hendrix, MC Rogers led the attack with 11 kills while Amber Melcher had 16 assists. Leila Matsumoto added 15 digs while Lauren Petrisin had five blocks.
The Hendrix match was the first game of a six game homestand. The Lynx will welcome in Sewanee and Texas-Dallas on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and follow that up with a matchup against Centre on Sunday at 11 a.m.
