Rhodes splits Centre series

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes softball team spilt their Southern Athletic Association series with Centre College, going 1-1 with the Colonels on Sunday.

The Lynx move to 9-19-1 on the year and 8-9-1 in league play while the Colonels move to 11-9 in 2015 and 9-7 in conference action.

In the first contest the Lynx offense struggled to spark, and Rhodes fell 11-0 in five innings.

Rhodes tailed two hits, with a pair of doubles from Caroline Reilly and Christine Hume.

In the circle, Emily Cerrito went two and two-thirds innings in her first start of the season. Forrest Skelton came in to relieve, and threw two and one-third inning with four strikeouts and zero hits.

In the second matchup, the Lynx found what they were missing, and capitalized with an 11-1 win.

Head coach Luke Wagner's squad got things going right from the start when Hume knocked one over the left center fence for the 1-0 lead. Kirsten Samuels followed suit, sending a one-run shot over the left center fence for the 2-0 lead.

The Lynx really got the offense going in the third inning, when a Rachel Pewitt doubled down the left field line to score Makenzie Martin for the 3-0 lead. A Reilly single to left field scored two, pushing the Lynx out ahead 5-0. On the next at bat, Samuels notched her second home run of the contest, a three-run homer for the 8-0 lead.

Rhodes added two more runs in the bottom of four, with a Reilly double to center field that scored Caroline Sutton and Pewitt for the 11-0 lead. Centre tacked on a single run in the fifth inning, but it wasn't enough as Rhodes secured the 11-1 win.

In the second game, the Lynx rallied for 13 hits, paced by Pewitt who went 3-for-3 from the plate, and Samuels who had four RBIs.

Forrest Skelton went the distance, throwing all five innings, with seven K's and scattering five hits.
