JACKSON, Miss. – The No. 18 Rhodes baseball team survived No. 17 Millsaps College on Saturday in the second round of the Southern Athletic Association Conference Tournament, 4-3.
The Lynx boast a record of 29-11 on the year, while the Majors fall to 27-11 in their 2015 campaign.
Rhodes broke the scoring silence in the fourth inning, when
Ryan Olive got on base with a double to left center. An
Andrew Wallis single through the right side scored the speedy sophomore, to give Rhodes a 1-0 lead.
The Lynx tacked on their second run in the sixth frame when
David Balaguer knocked a shot through the left side, scoring
Justin Genter. The Majors worked in one run in the bottom of the same inning, but the Lynx held on to a 2-1 lead.
Millsaps tacked on a pair of runs in the eighth inning to take a slim 3-2 lead. But the clutch rally in the ninth inning that produced a pair of runs for the Lynx secured the 4-3 win.
Balaguer and Wallis led the Lynx with two hits apiece.
Blake Glauben got the start, throwing all eight and one-third innings with five strikeouts. Jack Merceer came in with one out in the eigth, and finished the game for the win.
The Lynx move on to the third round of the double elimination bracket.
