ATLANTA, Ga. – The No. 8 Rhodes baseball team spilt a doubleheader on Saturday against Southern Athletic Association foes Oglethorpe University.
The Lynx move to 18-5 on the season and 7-1 in league play, while the Stormy Petrels report a 10-9 record on the year and are 2-6 in conference action.
In the first game, Rhodes captured the 6-2 win. The Lynx tacked on three runs in the third, with a
Ryan Olive double scoring two, followed by a
David Balaguer RBI that sent home
Justin Genter.
Rhodes added two more runs in the fifth, with Olive getting things started again for the Lynx with a single to right center that scored
Bill Munson. Balaguer singled down the left field line to score the second run of the inning and give the Lynx a 5-0 lead. Oglethorpe notched a single run in the sixth.
Will Gietema sent home the final Lynx run in the seventh frame when he singled to left field, scoring
Andrew Wallis. The Petrels added a single run in the seventh, but the rally wasn't enough, as Rhodes brought home the 6-2 win.
Rhodes tallied 13 hits in the outing, with Genter and Wallis leading the way with three hits apiece. Wallis was just a homerun short of a cycle, with a single, double and triple in the contest.
Daniel Morris got the start and the win for the Lynx, throwing eight complete innings, with four strikeouts.
Josh Olejnik came in to close in the final inning of play, striking out two on only three batters faced.
In the second matchup of the day, The Lynx just missed, falling to Oglethorpe, 7-5.
The Petrels did all of their scoring in the first half of the contest, with two runs in the second and five runs in the third frame. Rhodes, forced to play catchup, added two runs in the fourth, with a Balaguer RBI scoring Genter for the Lynx first run. Wallis doubled to right center, scoring Olive to post a 7-2 score.
Rhodes added a run in each of the subsequent innings, with a Genter single to right field scoring Munson in the fifth, a
Bennett Notestine single scoring Wallis in the sixth and an Olive single sending Munson home in the seventh. The Lynx couldn't muster enough offense to overcome the Petrels hot start, and fell 7-5.
The Lynx tallied eight hits, paced by Genter and Wallis who each notched two.
Blake Glauben got the start, and the loss in his two and one-thirds innings pitched. The junior struck out four batters while on the mound.
Will Vance closed out the contest with two complete innings pitched, allowing zero runs.
Rhodes will wrap up the series with the Petrels on March 22.
