Rhodes falls to BSC

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes softball team dropped a series to Birmingham Southern College on Sunday to open Southern Athletic Association play, going 0-2-1.

The Lynx fall to 1-12-1 on the season and 0-2-1 in conference play, while the Panthers move to 8-4-1 and 4-2-1 in league action.

In the first contest, Rhodes narrowly missed, when they led the contest from the third inning on when an Allison Long double to left center scored Caroline Sutton to give the Lynx the 1-0 lead. The same score stood through to the top of the seventh, when a BSC bomb put the Panthers ahead 4-1, with that score standing through the final inning.

Rhodes notched five hits in the outing, with Rachel Pewitt leading the way, batting 2-3 in the contest.

Forrest Skelton went the distance for the Lynx in game one, throwing seven complete frames, with two strike outs.

In the second contest, the Lynx fell behind early when the Panthers tacked on three runs in the second inning. BSC added runs in the fourth and fifth, with one and two respectively. Rhodes broke their scoring silence in the sixth, when Kirsten Samuels singled to bring home Makenzie Martin to make the count 6-1. The Panthers tacked on two more runs in the seventh to post the 8-1 win.

Rhodes tallied eight hits, with two apiece from Parker and Sutton to pace the Lynx.

Caroline Reilly threw a complete seven-inning game, with one strikeout.

In the final contest of the day, the Lynx offense got going right off the bat with a big second inning. Skelton batted in the first run to take the 1-0 lead. Long singled to center to bring in Sutton for the Lynx second run. Parker batted in the next run to take a 3-0 lead out of the inning.

BSC hit a two-run homer in the fourth to pull within two. The Lynx weren't finished, as Skelton singled to right to score Sutton in the fourth frame for the 5-2 lead. In the fifth inning, Pewitt notched a solo shot over the left fence to put the Lynx up 6-2. BSC tallied four runs in the seventh to knot the contest at 6-6. Due to darkness, the contest was ruled a tie.

Rhodes racked up six hits in the outing, with Pewitt going two-for-three.

Long started the contest in the circle, where she threw four innings. Skelton finished the contest, throwing two strikeouts in three innings.

Rhodes will be back in action on March 21 when they head to Mount Berry, Ga. to take on Berry College.
