MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes baseball team picked up a pair of strong conference opening wins over Centre College 2-0, 3-2 on the backs of strong pitching.
After the pair of wins, the Lynx post a 9-2 record on the season and open conference play with a 2-0 mark. The Colonels fall to 0-2 to start the season, and 0-2 in league play.
In the first contest,
Daniel Morris got the start on the hill for the Lynx, and went the distance, throwing a complete nine inning shutout in the 2-0 victory. Morris threw four strikeouts and allowed only two hits in the outing.
The Lynx offense got things done with three hits, including a double from
Josh Keen. Rhodes posted a run in the sixth inning when
Bill Munson hit a sacrifice fly to bring in
Josh Keen. Rhodes added an insurance run in the eighth when
Justin Genter hit a hard hit ball to third, scoring
Levi Greenberg.
In the second matchup,
Blake Glauben picked up his third win of the season, throwing a complete seven inning contest in the 3-2 win. The junior struck out an impressive eight batters and only allowed four hits in the win.
On the offensive side, the Lynx again tallied three hits, but it proved to be enough.
Ryan Olive got things started in the first when a single to right field scored Genter. Centre was able to knot things up in the third with a single run, but in the bottom of the frame the Lynx regained the lead when Genter hit a sac fly to bring Munson home.
Rhodes added their third run in the fifth after Munson worked his way home on some head up base running to take the 3-2 lead. The Colones added another run in the sixth, but it wouldn't be enough as the Lynx held on for the 3-2 win.
Rhodes will finish the series with Centre on Sunday, March 1 at 11 a.m.
