MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes women's basketball picked up a solid win on senior day over Birmingham Southern College, 78-53.
The Lynx improve to 17-7 on the year and 8-5 in conference play while the Panthers fall to 10-14 on the season, and 3-10 in league action.
The Lynx, who fell to the Panthers earlier in the year on the road, came out with a vengeance. Head coach
Matt Dean's squad scored seven straight to take the early 7-0 lead. The Lynx continued to keep their distance, and after a
Blaire Smith three at the 12:42 mark, Rhodes posted a score of 19-11.
The Panthers fought to whittle down the Lynx lead, but after a Dean timeout at the 7:11 mark, Rhodes went on a 16-1 run to establish a 19-point lead at a score of 42-24. The run featured trey's from
Sarah Johnson, and a pair from
Erin Deery. The Lynx held on top their lead down the stretch and took a 44-27 advantage into the break.
At the half, Johnson led all scorers with 13 points, followed by 11 points apiece from Blair Smith and Deery. Rhodes shot a hot 53.6 first half field goal percentage, with a blazing 50.0 from beyond the arc.
BSC's efforts were led by Jasmynn Batts who totaled seven points, with Kayla Ford and Halle Knowles each netting four points apiece. The Lynx held the Panthers to 34.6 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three point range.
In the second half the Lynx continued to widen the gap, in complete control of the contest. After a
Symone Daniels layup at the 11:34 mark, the Lynx hit their first lead in the 20's, with a 63-43 advantage.
The hot shooting Rhodes squad remained hot, and a pair of three's from
Dy'Nelle Todman and Smith gave Rhodes a 73-49 lead with 6:15 to play. Down the stretch, the Lynx held strong, and posted a strong 78-53 win.
Rhodes was led by Johnson, who finished with 21 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Smith added 14 points, with four assists as well, while Daniels chipped in 12 points in the outing. Deery and Todman both worked into double digits, with 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Lynx put up a respectable 52 percent shooting from the field, with a hot 40 percent from beyond the arc. The Lynx forced 10 BSC turnovers, which they turned into 21 points.
On the Panthers side, Batts finished with 15 points, and six rebounds in the outing. Curry netted seven in the outing.
Rhodes will wrap up the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 22 when they host league-leading Millsaps College at 1 p.m.
