MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes women's basketball team went head-to-head with conference foe's Berry College on Sunday, 72-62.
The Lynx improve 16-7 on the year and 7-5 in league play, while the Vikings fall to 16-7 on the season and 8-4 in conference action.
With a top half conference battle, the contest promised to be a tight battle. The Lynx worked out to a four point lead after
Sarah Johnson knocked down a trey from deep to put the Lynx up 13-9 with 13:01 to play. Rhodes worked to hold off the Vikings, and after trailing by two, the Lynx charged back to take a seven point lead after a 11-2 run, after a
Dy'Nelle Todman jumper made the count 24-17 at the 7:19 mark.
Again Berry was able to whittle down the Lynx lead, and take a lead of their own, but Rhodes was not ready to relinquish the lead. Down the stretch Rhodes fought back to take a four point advantage after a
Hannah Orth three at the 2:04 mark. Rhodes held on, and with a Johnson lay-in to beat the buzzer, the Lynx took a 40-36 lead into the half.
At the break, Todman lead the way with an impressive 21 points. Johnson tallied 12 by the midway mark, with five assists. For the Vikings, Chalir Segarra netted 13 points, with Mel McLean chipping in 12. Rhodes shot a hot 51.7 percent from the field in the opening half, and 38.5 from beyond the arc. Berry posted 44.4 percent shooting from the floor, and 45.5 percent from three-point range.
The Lynx came out swinging, and by the 17:37 mark, Rhodes posted its first double-digit lead at 47-36 after baskets from
Symone Daniels, and Todman and a three from
Natalie Goodrum. Rhodes kept a healthy distance over the Vikings, and with 6:55 to play, the Lynx lead swelled to 59-45.
The Lynx held on down the stretch and picked up the 72-62 win, as head coach
Matt Dean picked up win number 208, making him the winningest head women's basketball coach in Rhodes College history.
Todman led all scorers with her 23 points, and was one rebound shy of the double-double at nine. Johnson finished with 18 points, and 10 assists for the double-double. Daniels chipped in 15 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double of her own.
Rhodes shot 42.9 percent from the field in the win. The Lynx forced 16 Vikings turnovers, which they turned into 18 points.
Berry was led by Segarra who netted 22 points, with McLean adding 16 points. Emma Cook chipped in 15 points. The Vikings shot 36.4 percent from the field, and 31.3 from three point range.
Rhodes will be back in action on Feb. 20 for their final weekend of regular season action, when they host Birmingham Southern College. The Lynx will honor the senior members of their team on Feb. 20 in a ceremony held at halftime of the men's game.
