MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes men's basketball team got back on track on Friday, bypassing Oglethorpe University, 72-57.
The Lynx improve to 15-6 on the season and 8-3 in the Southern Athletic Association, while the Stormy Petrels fall to 15-7 on the year and 6-5 in league action.
Rhodes got a lift right off the bat when
Luke Collins knocked down a Trey to open the contest. Oglethorpe charged to take a slim lead, but the hot handed Lynx would not stay down, as Collins hit another three which put Rhodes up two with 13:24 to play in the half.
The relentless Petrels continued to push, and a 9-2 run put Oglethorpe on top by the 7:31 mark. Head coach
Mike DeGeorge's squad refused to go quietly, and down the stretch, a sound Lynx offense worked out to a 27-20 lead after a pair of
Geoff Livsey free throws by the 1:54 mark. A deep
Brennan Sullivan three to close the half gave the Lynx a 30-24 advantage heading into the break.
At the midway point
Geoff Livsey led all scorers with 12 points and seven rebounds. Collins turned in six points at the half for the Lynx. On the Petrels side, Chris Lawrence led the way with eight, with Chase Wardlaw adding seven. Rhodes shot 42.3 percent from the field, while the Petrels fired 34.8 percent from the floor.
Rhodes worked to break the game open in the second half, and by the 16:34 mark, the Lynx had established a double digit lead at 40-30 after a pair of Collins free throws. The Lynx lead continued to grow, and after a Sullivan three and
Tyler Gee lay-in, the Lynx posted a 58-44 lead with 6:18 to play.
The Rhodes defense continued to hold strong, while the offense flourished, and the Lynx held on for the 72-57 win.
Livsey led all scorers with 22 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the year. Sullivan added 15, with five assists. Collins, netted 11 points with three steals and two assists. The Lynx shot 45.3 percent from the field in the contest, and fired 32.0 percent from beyond the three point line. Rhodes churned out 28 points in the pain, and capitalized Oglethorpe's 18 turnovers into 18 points.
For the Petrels, Lawrence finished with 19 points, with Wardlaw adding 13 to Oglethorpe's totals. The Petrels shot 42.6 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from three.
In the contest, Collins hit his 38th consecutive free throw, setting a new Rhodes record, as well as an SAA Conference record.
Rhodes will be back in action on Feb. 15 when they host Berry College.
