MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes men's basketball team blew by Berry College on Sunday in Southern Athletic Association action, 86-47.
The Lynx improve to 16-6 on the year and 9-3 in SAA play, while the Vikings fall to 7-16 on the season and 3-9 in conference action.
In a rematch of a heated contest earlier this season, thee Lynx took control from the get go and never looked back. A
Matt Wagner lay-in at the 12:49 mark gave the Lynx a 16-10 lead. Rhodes continued to widen the gap, and was sound on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court.
By the 7:14 mark, Rhodes pushed out to a 29-20 lead after
Drew Miller knocked down a trey. Rhodes continued with balanced offensive production, and down the stretch the Lynx kept their nine-point advantage, and took a 40-31 lead into the halftime break.
At the midway point,
Keyshawn Butts led the way with 11 points. Miller notched 10 points and two rebounds, with Wagner chipping in seven points. On the Vikings side, Owen Jacobs netted 10 points, with Lukas Korn and Nick Marder each scoring eight apiece. Rhodes shot 50.0 percent from the field in the opening half, with a 33.3 three-point percentage. Berry shot 38.5 percent from the floor, with only one first half three.
Rhodes got their first double-digit lead of the matchup right off the bat when
Geoff Livsey worked through the lane to push to a 43-31 lead with 18:39 to play. The Lynx took control, and the lead quickly swelled to 22 with the help of a 15-2 run at 58-36 with 10:57 to play.
Head coach
Mike DeGeorge's squad was in complete control down the stretch, with a Wagner old-fashioned three point play at the 5:27 mark giving Rhodes a 72-40 lead. The Lynx held on for the dominant 86-47 win.
Miller led all scorers with 24 points, and picked up eight rebounds, seven steals and three assists in the outing. Wagner and Butts each turned in 12 points apiece, with Butts pulling in five rebounds and Wagner grabbing four.
Rhodes shot a hot 53.2 percent from the field in the contest, with an impressive 44.0 percent from three-point range. The Lynx out-rebounded their counterparts by a margin of 42-33 and forced 24 Berry turnovers, cashing in for 35 points off turnovers.
On the Vikings side, Korn and Jacobs each netted 12 points in the outing. Nick Marder chipped in eight in the contest. Berry shot 30.9 from the field in the outing.
Rhodes will be back in action on Feb. 20 when they host Birmingham Southern College to kick off the final weekend of regular season play. Rhodes will honor its senior members of the basketball team in a ceremony held prior to tip off.
