ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Thank in part to a 41-30 rebounding advantage, including a 13-4 advantage on the offensive end, the Rhodes College women's basketball team were able to knock off Wisconsin Lutheran, 53-50, on Saturday afternoon at the McWilliams Classic at Washington University.
Rhodes struggled from the field, shooting 19-for-56 (33.9%), but did shoot 7-for-16 (43.8%) from downtown. The Lynx held the Warriors to 17-for-45 (37.8%) shooting and 5-for-15 (33.3%) from three. Rhodes turned the ball over 17 times while Wisconsin Lutheran only had 13 turnovers. However, Rhodes dominance on the boards proved to be the difference.
After jumping out to a 10-2 lead which included senior
Catherine Eckert scoring the first eight points of the game, the Warriors responded with a 10-0 run throughout the first quarter to take a 12-10 lead. The Lynx answered with a 6-0 run to end the quarter, taking a 16-12 lead at the end of the first period.
Wisconsin Lutheran started the second period off with a 6-0 run for an 18-16 lead, but Rhodes responded with an 11-0 run to go up 27-18, looking to be in complete control.
However, the game of runs continued as the Warriors closed the half on a 9-0 run as Rhodes did not score for the final 5:53. The game would go into the break tied at 27 a piece.
Both teams traded baskets back-and-forth throughout the third period, but with the game tied at 36, Rhodes went on a 7-1 run to end the period to take a seven point lead into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Rhodes got their lead out to as many as 10, but went cold in the final 10 minutes as Wisconsin Lutheran made one final run. It would not be enough as the Lynx used solid defense and free throws from freshman
Sara Giesen to earn the win.
Eckert led the way with 16 points including 4-for-8 from three. Junior
Blaire Smith added eight points and four assists while senior
Symone Daniels added seven points, 11 boards, and two steals. Sophomore
Erin Deery added five points and four boards off the bench while Giesen had five points including three clutch free throws towards the end. Jen Dowden led the Warriors with 17 points and eight boards.
