Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Hoops Falls Short in OT Despite Career-Days from Galvin, Gee

MEMPHIS - Junior Daniel Galvin finished with 28 points while junior Tyler Gee added 22 points, nine rebounds, and six assists, but it would not be enough as the Rhodes College men's basketball team fell to Aurora University in overtime, 107-95.

Free throws would be the story, as Rhodes shot 21-for-34 (61.8%) in the game despite shooting 33-for-67 (49.3%) from the field and 8-for-26 (30.8%) from three. The Spartans were also red-hot from deep, finish 17-for-34 (50%) from behind the arch, a high percentage than their field goal percentage (49.2%). Rhodes was outrebounded, 38-36, but won the turnover battle, 18-16. The Lynx dominated the paint, outscoring the Spartans, 44-24.

Both teams exchanged baskets back-and-forth through 10 minutes of the first half. With Aurora leading 20-18, Rhodes went on a 17-4 run thanks to excellent play from Galvin and Gee for a 35-26 lead.

The Spartans would use the deep ball to chip away at Rhodes' lead in the last five minutes, eventually cutting the deficit to 45-44 as the game moved into halftime.

Despite some momentum from Aurora at the end of the first half, it was Rhodes who took control in the second half thanks to the great play from Gee. The Lynx attacked the basket and would move their lead to as much as 10 midway through the second half.

Just when it seemed Rhodes was ready to put the Spartans away for good, Aurora would find a way to hit a big bucket, especially from behind the arch.

Rhodes would lead by 10 with six minutes remaining, but Aurora used the next two minutes to go on an 8-1 run to push the game to 79-76 with less than four to play.

The Lynx moved their lead back out to 83-76 thanks to huge buckets from Galvin and junior Brennan Sullivan, but another 8-1 run, including a game tying three from Jordan LaGrone, saw the game deadlocked at 84 with 28 seconds left in the game.

After a turnover with two seconds left by Rhodes, the Spartans looked for a full court pass for the win; however, a bad pass gave junior JJ Weir a look at the buzzer from the top of three-point line. However, the shot just missed off the front of the rim and the game moved into overtime.

In overtime, Aurora caught fire, shooting 5-for-6 from the field, including 3-for-4 from three, and 10-for-10 from the charity stripe to escape Memphis with a win over the Lynx.

Galvin was 11-for-16 from the field and 3-for-4 from deep while Gee was 6-for-11 from the field and 10-for-12 from the free throw line. Sophomore Ian Harrison added 12 points off the bench including three rebounds while Sullivan finished with 11 points. Weir had seven assists and four steals.

For Aurora, Nick Kladis had a huge game with 34 points while Chris Fritsch added 17 points off the bench.

Rhodes moves to 4-4 on the season and will take some time off for the Christmas holidays. They will return to Mallory Gymnasium next week, on December 29th, as they welcome in Rust College at 6 p.m. for the Rhodes Year-End Classic.
