Men's Hoops Holds Off Hendrix to Take Conference Opener

CONWAY, Ark. - Down 50-46 with around six minutes remaining, the Rhodes College men's basketball team went on a huge 10-0 run to take control of their conference opener against Hendrix, while holding off a late Warrior rally, to win, 63-59 on Wednesday evening.

Rhodes was 27-for-58 (46.6%) from the field and 5-for-12 (41.7%) from behind the arch including some clutch three in the second half. The Lynx held Hendrix to 16-for-42 (38.1%) shooting, but the Warriors shot 6-of-14 (42.9%) from three and got to the free throw line 32 times. Rhodes also forced 19 turnovers on the night while only committing 14.

The Lynx got off to a tough start as they were ice cold from the field, as they did not score for the first 7:30, falling behind 12-0 in the process. The Lynx would use the remainder of the half to outscore the Warriors, 28-16, going into the break tied. Rhodes was able to use their size in the paint to outscore the Warriors, 20-6, in the first half and got 14 points from their bench.

In the second half, Rhodes began to take control, racing out to a seven point lead four minutes into the half. However, just when it seemed the Lynx had control of the game, Hendrix would respond and move within a possession.

The Warriors finally got going, tying the game midway through the second half and gaining the lead a little later. Hendrix pushed that lead out to four before Rhodes' huge run to swing the momentum.

Junior Andrew Lowrie started it off with a three-pointer followed by a three from sophomore Keyshawn Butts to move ahead by two. Junior Aquil Muhammad earned a bucket in the paint followed by a layup from Lowrie to take a 56-50 lead.

Hendrix did not go down quietly as they battled back, making it a two point game with a little over a minute to go. After a missed layup from Lowrie, Muhammad pulled down a key offensive rebound and dished it out to junior JJ Weir, who scored his only points of the game at the time it was needed most, scorching the net from downtown to go back up by five.

Rhodes closed the game out on the line and earned the a huge road victory against the defending SAA Tournament Champs.

Lowrie led the way with 13 points off the bench while Muhammad had a huge game as well, going for 12 points and 13 boards. Butts and junior Brennan Sullivan each added nine while Weir finished with three and nine assists. Defensively, Rhodes had 15 steals on the evening led by Weir with four followed by Lowrie and junior Tyler Gee with three a piece. Sophomore Ian Harrison added three blocked shots off the bench.

For Hendrix, Preston Smith and Bryce Batchelor each had 13 points on the evening.

The Lynx go to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in SAA play. Rhodes will hit the road for Lookout Mountain, Ga. to take on Covenant College on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. (3 p.m. CT).
