Football Falls on the Road at Centre

DANVILLE, Ky. - Despite a 214 yard rushing effort from freshman P.J. Settles, the Rhodes College football team fell short on Saturday afternoon to the Centre Colonels, who were able to rack up over 500 yards of total offensive in a 41-14 victory on their home field.

The Lynx fall to 4-5 with one more game remaining next weekend. They now sit at 2-5 in the Southern Athletic Association.

Rhodes got off to a tough start, fumbling the first snap of the game with the Colonels recovering in Lynx territory. Centre would score in five plays as quarterback Heath Haden found some open space to go on top 7-0.

The Lynx would have an answer though as Settles found a crease and scampered 72-yards to the house to tie the game at 7 a piece.

The Colonels responded almost immediately, moving 68-yards on seven plays resulting in a three yard touchdown pass from Haden to Austin Hayes. After a Rhodes three-and-out, Centre moved ahead 20-7 in six play, covering 67-yards.

The Lynx would respond with a beautiful 16-play, 67 yard drive, moving deep into Centre territory. Rhodes attempted to put points on the board as Kyle Edmiston lined up for a 30-yard field goal; however, the kick would be blocked and the Colonels would take possession back.

They answered quickly, moving 65-yards in six plays to move the score to 27-7. The Lynx would respond before the break, going 14 plays, 66-yards as sophomore Alex Chavez capped the drive with a 13 yard score to cut the deficit to 27-14.

Neither team could get much going offensively in the second half. Rhodes would put together two great drives in the third quarter, moving into Centre territory each time. However, the Lynx would come away empty handed on both occasions, as they turned the ball over on downs.

The Colonels would carry that momentum into the fourth quarter, scoring a pair of touchdowns to put the game out of reach at 41-14. The Lynx had another opportunity to put points on the board, getting inside the 10 late in the fourth, but came away with nothing as, again, they turned it over on downs.

Settles was impressive both with his arm and legs, going 10-for-22 for 103 yards passing and adding his big day on the ground. Seven other Lynx rushed the ball on Saturday, but only combined to go for 50 yards. Senior Matt Baldwin led all receivers with seven catches for 60 yards while junior Brandon Box caught two passes for 34 yards.

Defensively, freshman Duke Sherrell led the way with 10 tackles and a tackle for loss while senior Michael Shield had nine tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Freshman Sam McLain forced a fumble on the afternoon and recovered it as well.

Rhodes will conclude the season next Saturday with a matchup against Millsaps College. The Lynx will celebrate Senior Day as well as host Cajun Fest. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Crain Field.
