Football Drops Finale to Millsaps

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College football celebrated one of the most accomplished group of seniors in Rhodes football history on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon, but fell just short to the Millsaps College Majors in the season finale, 31-21.

Rhodes concludes their season at 4-6 record and a 2-6 record in Southern Athletic Association play.

After neither team could get anything going on their first possession, junior John Dodd picked off a Chance Clowers and returned it 20 yards into Millsaps territory. The Lynx would answer in eight plays as sophomore Alex Chavez punched it in from nine yards.

Millsaps would respond on the next drive, going eight plays in 80 yards as Clowers hooked up with Rashard Sims for a 31-yard score to tie the game at seven.

On Rhodes' next possession, the Majors thought they had a breakthrough as a bad hand off exchange put the ball on the ground and gave Millsaps great field position at the Majors 15.

After the defense held, senior Wyatt McRae blocked the 32 yard attempt to keep the game tied at seven moving into the second quarter.

The two teams exchanged punts for the next couple of possessions until Millsaps put together a nine play drive, covering 72-yards, and finishing with a 25 yard field goal to go ahead 10-7 towards the end of the quarter.

The Lynx responded with an excellent two minute drill, only taking two minutes to move the ball in 11-plays. Junior Mason Windatt pulled in a 37-yard reception to put Rhodes in great position to score. A few plays later, freshman PJ Settles connected with senior Beau Egan for six to give Rhodes a 14-10 lead with under 25 seconds remaining.

Instead of running the clock out, Millsaps elected to use their time to try and get more points on the board. Their gamble would pay off as Ty Proctor found Sims for a 63-yard score with three seconds on the clock for a 17-14 lead and all of the momentum.

Neither team could get much going offensively at the start of the second half, but Millsaps took control of the game, putting together a huge 13-play, 61-yard drive, converting on two fourth-down conversions including fourth-and-goal at the one to move ahead 24-14.

Rhodes would start the fourth quarter with the ball, using another big play from Windatt as he made an unbelievable catch for a 42-yard gain into the redzone. Senior Casey Joseph pounded it in from a yard out to cut the deficit to 24-21.

The Majors moved it deep into Rhodes territory, eating up over five minutes of clock and lined up for a 26-yard field goal, but McRae, again, came up huge and blocked the field goal to keep the game at a three point contest.

One play later, a bad pitched forced a fumble which was recovered by Millsaps at the four yard line of Rhodes. Four plays later, the Majors moved their lead to 31-21 and shut down any sort of Rhodes rally to preserve the win.

Settles finished with 60 yards on 23 carries and was 12-for-17 passing for 161 yards and a TD. Windatt led all receivers with three catches for 95 yards. Defensively, senior Michael Shield led the way with 10 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss while freshmen Duke Sherrell and Eric Monroe each had nine tackles with Monroe tallying three pass breakups. Sophomore Elliott Tostrud had eight tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.

Rhodes does conclude their season, but had the opportunity to recognize and thank their 18 seniors, who finished with 14 conference wins, the most all time in Rhodes football history, and 26 overall wins, which is 4th overall in Rhodes history.
