Women's Soccer Punches Ticket to Championship Game in PKs

DANVILLE, Ky. - Not even 110 minutes of soccer could decide who would move on to face Centre in the Southern Athletic Association Championship Game on Sunday. Two huge saves from senior Chandler Kuhlman and a game winning PK from senior Addie Fargason moved the Rhodes College women's soccer team into Sunday's game over Sewanee, 1-1 (4-3 PK).

For the Lynx, they move to 11-5-2 overall and will play in the SAA Championship Game for second straight season and the third time in the last four seasons. All three times they have faced the Colonels.

The Tigers were in control in the first half, scoring the games first goal in the 14th minute as Katie Morrison found the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead. Sewanee outshot the Lynx, 10-2, and held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.

However, Rhodes responded in the second half, gaining possession and putting together offensive set pieces to pressure the Tiger defense. In the 61st minute, senior Shannon Donelson found freshman Aly Hoyt, who scored her third goal of the season, and at a huge point to tie the game at 1-1. For Donelson, it was her team-leading seventh assist on the season.

The Lynx held a 5-3 advantage in shots in the second half, but the Tigers led 4-2 in corners.

Neither team could find the go-ahead goal, so the moved into overtime.

Rhodes was the team finding opportunities throughout both overtimes, outshooting Sewanee, 4-2, and holding tight on defense to keep the game even. Despite the opportunities, neither team could find the game-winner. With the postseason in full swing, the game would move to a penalty kick shootout.

Morrison approached the box for the first attempt from Sewanee, and Kuhlman stoned her with a huge save, while Donelson put home her kick for a 1-0 lead.

Both teams would score on their next two kicks as freshman Sydnie Schindler and senior Elizabeth Wayda each scored on their PKs. Kuhlman would make another big save on Tyler Edell to give the Lynx a chance to win the game. However, Tiger goalkeeper Olivia Glascoe made a big save of her own to keep the game alive.

As the final shooters approached, Sewanee would score on their PK, but Fargason would end it, scoring to send the Lynx bench into jubilation and move Rhodes into the championship game on Sunday.

Kuhlman was terrific, finishing with seven saves in regulation and overtime and added two big stops in PKs. After giving up the early goal, the defense of Rhodes was terrific behind the likes of sophomore Sarah Rostamo, junior Kelsey Sweeney, junior Sarah Wachter, and freshman Christine Zachry

Offensively, Hoyt led the offensive attack with three shots while senior Hannah Selner, freshman Brenna Katz, and Schindler all had two shots on the evening.

Rhodes will look to capture its first ever tournament championship, facing off with the Colonels on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET (12 p.m. CT). Centre has won three straight SAA tournament titles.
