MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College men's basketball team shot 30-for-48 (63%) from the field including a pair of 20 point outings from juniors
Brennan Sullivan and
Aquil Muhammad to roll past the Millikin Big Blue, 85-67, on Sunday afternoon in Mallory Gymnasium.
The Lynx also shot 9-for-19 (47%) from behind the arch while doing an excellent job of taking care of the ball, only turning it over nine times. The Big Blue shot it well from the field, going 21-for-43 (49%) and 6-for-16 (38%) from behind the arch, but just could not match the hot shooting of the Lynx. Rhodes was able to force 12 Millikin turnovers on the afternoon.
With the game tied at five a piece, Rhodes went on a 9-0 run thanks five points from Sullivan as well as a pair of buckets from junior
Tyler Gee and sophomore
Keyshawn Butts to take a 14-5 lead. Millikin would respond with an 8-0 run of the own to move within one as each team began to trade buckets going forward.
Late in the first half, the Big Blue would move ahead, 29-27, but Rhodes would close the half with the final five points thanks to a basket from Muhammad and a three from Sullivan to take a 32-29 lead into the break.
Rhodes came out on fire to begin the second half, starting the half on a 12-0 run. Rhodes got five baskets on the run from five different players. As the half progressed, junior
Andrew Lowrie could not miss, hitting three three pointers in the first five minutes. By the 15 minutes mark, Rhodes found themselves with a 50-34 lead.
Millikin would move the game within 12 with around nine minutes to play, but that would be as close as they would get as Rhodes quickly pushed it back out to 18 and cruised to their second with on the season. Rhodes shot 17-for-23 (74%) in the second half.
Muhammad and Lowrie each scored 13 points in the second half and each of them, along with Sullivan, we're perfect from the field. Muhammad added eight boards and a steal to his night while Lowrie finished with 17 points. Gee scored 11 points to go with two steals and five rebounds while Butts and junior
JJ Weir each had four assists. Freshman
Daniel Darst finished with three steals and six rebounds.
Rhodes moves to 2-2 on the young year, finishing third at the Rhodes College Thanksgiving Classic. The Lynx will prepare to open the conference season on Wednesday night as they travel to Conway, Ark. to take on the Hendrix College Warriors. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
