SHERMAN, Texas - A 13-2 run at the start of the second half put the Rhodes College women's basketball team in a hole that they could not recover from as they fell in their first road test of the season to the Austin College 'Roos, 79-66.
Rhodes shot 22-for-59 (37%) from the field, 6-for-27 (22%) from behind the arch, and 16-for-25 (64%) from the charity stripe. On the other side, the 'Roos shot 27-for-64 (42%) from the field, 6-for-16 (38%) from behind the arch, and 19-for-26 (73%) from the free throw line. The Lynx were out rebounded 43-40 and had 22 turnovers while only forcing 17.
Austin College raced out to a 12-5 and moved their lead to 16-9 after one quarter of play. Midway through the second quarter, with the Lynx down 35-26, Rhodes stormed back with buckets from junior
Blaire Smith and sophomore
Jessie Ustick to make it a 35-31 game. However, the 'Roos would take some momentum into the break with a three pointer before the buzzer for a 38-31 lead.
At the beginning of the third quarter, Austin College went on their 13-2 run to take a 51-33 advantage midway through the quarter. Rhodes started to get some offense flowing, but could not slow down the 'Roo offense as they were only able to get within 11 throughout the final 15 minutes.
Senior
Catherine Eckert was 6-for-9 from the field and 3-for-6 from deep to finish with 16 points on the afternoon. Smith and sophomore
Erin Deery each pitched in 14 points while senior
Bailey Kramer led all rebounders with seven. Defensively, senior
Symone Daniels and freshman
Allie Young each had two blocks while Daniels and Ustick had a pair of steals.
Rhodes will prepare to hit the road this weekend as they compete in the Centre Classic in Danville, Ky. The Lynx will play on Friday as they take on Marietta College at 5 p.m. ET.
