Field Hockey Claims Regular Season Title; Will Host Tourney with Win Over Transy

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Rhodes College field hockey team claimed a share of the 2015 Southern Athletic Association regular season title, defeating Transylvania on the road, 5-0. With the win, the Lynx will host next week's SAA Tournament at Mason Field.

The Lynx now move to 13-5 as they close the regular season and finish with a 7-1 record in SAA play.

Rhodes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 11 minutes as junior Christina DiFelice scored a pair of goals, upping her team-leading total to 14 in 2015. The Lynx were dominant throughout the first half, holding a 13-3 advantage in shots as well as a 9-2 lead in penalty corners. Despite the big numbers, Rhodes only held the two goal lead at the break.

That would change in the second half as Rhodes dominated possession and pushed their lead out to 5-0 thanks to goals from senior Mary Rose Hazel, freshman Jillian Christensen, and junior Mackenzie Busby. Rhodes held a 12-0 advantage in shots in the second half and a 9-0 advantage in corners.

Hazel led the way with six shots on the day while DiFelice added four. Busby and seniors Alex Friedman, Evy Royther, and Katie Johnson all had two shots. Johnson also assisted on the final goal of the day. In a game where the defense had to be at its best to earn the right to hose, the Lynx got a great effort from sophomore goalkeeper Laura Eckelkamp had three saves while Johnson, Friedman, junior Kennedy Brislin, and senior Jordan Kugler were also terrific on the defensive side.

Rhodes will be at home this upcoming weekend for the SAA Championship. Check rhodeslynx.com throughout the week for information including times, dates, and much more involving this weekend's event.
