Field Hockey Rolls Past Transy and into SAA Championship Game

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College field hockey team were relentless on Saturday afternoon, rolling past the Transylvania Pioneers in the semifinals of the Southern Athletic Association Championship, 8-0.

With the win, the Lynx will play in their fourth straight SAA Championship Game and will look to win their third title. They improve to 14-5 overall and will take on Centre College at 11 a.m., a team who defeated Sewanee later in the day, 2-1, in double overtime.

Senior Evy Royther got the Lynx on the board in only three minutes as junior Christina DiFelice assisted on the first goal of the game. Eight minutes later, senior Mary Rose Hazel found senior Alex Friedman to put the Lynx up 2-0 followed by another three minutes later from Royther, again on an assist from DiFelice, to take control of the match at 3-0.

Rhodes would move ahead 4-0 when senior Jordan Kugler got on the board with less than four minutes remaining thanks, in part, to an assist from junior Grace Whelan.

In the second half, the Lynx would use a ten minute run midway through the second half to score four goals and push the lead out of reach at 8-0. DiFelice would score twice in the half while Friedman added her second goal of the game. Junior Mackenzie Busby picked up a goal as well while Royther had one assist throughout the half.

Rhodes would outshoot the Pioneers, 20-2, finished with 10 shots in both halves. The Lynx also held a 21-6 advantage in penalty corners. 

DiFelice upped her goal total to 16 and assist total to 10 while Royther moved to 13 goals on the season and eight assists. Friedman scored her sixth goal of the season while Busby had her seventh. Kugler scored her fourth goal of the season while Hazel assisted on her eighth goal and Whelan had her fourht assist of the year.

Rhodes goes for its seventh conference championship in school history as they take on the Colonels at 11 a.m. Rhodes is encouraging all fans to come out, wear red, and cheer the Lynx on to a conference championship.
