SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Rhodes College men's soccer team gave up a goal in the 78th minute to drop a 1-0 contest to their arch-rivals, the University of the South, on Friday evening at Puett Field.
The two teams were not able to square off until an hour and a half later than anticipated due to a weather delay in the previous women's match.
Rhodes got off to a tough start in the first half, as they were out shot by Sewanee, 10-0. However, the Lynx defense held strong throughout the half, blanking the Tigers as the game was scoreless going into the half.
The second half was a whole different game for Rhodes as they became the aggressor offensively and out shot the Tigers, 9-4. Rhodes also earned four corner kicks in the half as they tried to get out with a huge conference victory.
But Sewanee would get the go-ahead goal from Teddy Benjamin and would hold off the Lynx in the final 12-minutes to earn the win.
Freshman
Richard Lucarelli paced the offense for Rhodes with five shots in the match while senior
Paul Burdette, junior
Evan Wladis, sophomore William MItchell, and freshman
Austin Ly each added a shot on the evening.
Rhodes moves to 4-4-3 overall and 0-1-2 in Southern Athletic Association play. Rhodes will return to play on Sunday as they travel to Danville, Ky. to take on Centre College at 2 p.m. CT.
