SEWANEE, Tenn. - Senior
Mary Rose Hazel scored the game winning goal seven minutes into overtime to lift the Rhodes College field hockey team to a 3-2 overtime win over 10th-ranked Lynchburg College on Friday afternoon.
For Hazel, it was her fifth goal of the season and could not come at a more opportune time. Rhodes moves to 7-4 on the year and remains 3-1 in Southern Athletic Association play.
The Lynx got on the board first as senior
Alex Friedman put away the games first goal in the first two minutes thank to an assist from junior
Christina DiFelice. The Hornets would respond with 13 minutes remaining in the half as Nicole Simpao knotted the game at one.
The Lynx were the aggressor in the first half, outshooting Lynchburg, 10-5, and holding a 4-2 advantage in corners. It would pay off as sophomore
Lauren Travis took a pass from senior
Julie Hertzman, and scored her fourth goal of the season to give Rhodes a 2-1 lead going into the break.
The Lynx kept the pressure up throughout the second half, again outshooting the Hornets, 10-5; however, Lynchburg would tie the game up again, this time on a goal from Kayla Copeman.
The game moved into overtime where both teams were even throughout the extra period, both getting off three shots before Hazel scored the game winner.
Hazel was key to the Lynx offensive performance all throughout the day, taking seven shots in the contest to lead the way. Senior
Evy Royther added four shots while senior
Mackenzie Busby took three. Sophomore goalkeeper
Laura Eckelkamp added five big saves in the contest.
Rhodes will return to action tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. as they will remain in Sewanee to battle the University of South in a SAA matchup.
