Ellen Platt, the Rhodes College volleyball team earned their biggest win of the season, upsetting the 20th-ranked Berry College Vikings on the road, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon.
The Lynx came-from-behind twice, at 1-0 and 2-1, to force a fifth set and win the match. Fresh off their first conference win on Saturday over Oglethorpe, Rhodes moves to 8-10 overall and 2-5 in the SAA as the young Lynx earned one of their biggest wins of the 2015 season.
Both teams had a .168 hitting percentage in the match with Rhodes earning 56 kills to only 46 from the Vikings.
In the first set, Berry was able to take it to Rhodes, hitting .233 in the match including 11 kills for a 25-18 win. The Lynx only came away with nine kills to six errors, hitting .120.
The second set was a different story. Even though Rhodes shot a lower percentage in the second set (.105), the Lynx used a great defensive effort to hold Berry to a .029 hitting percentage, including seven errors, to take the second set, 25-22. Rhodes did have 13 kills in the set compared to nine errors.
The Lynx hit their lowest percentage in the third set, hitting only .075, despite 10 kills while Berry was red hot, hitting .241 and only committing two errors in the process to roll through the third set with a 25-15.
From there, the Lynx turned it on to another level. In the critical fourth set, the Lynx had 15 kills to only four errors (.268). With the score tied at 16, Rhodes proceeded to score six of the next seven points to pull ahead 22-17. Berry would rally back to make it 22-21, but the Lynx held strong, scoring the final three points to win the set and force a fifth set, 25-21.
In the final set, each team exchanged points back-and-forth with the Lynx clinging to a 10-9 lead. Rhodes would take all of the momentum as they scored the next four points behind two kills from Bishop to move ahead 14-9. After a Berry point, freshman
Caroline Perlis put the match away with a kill to earn the huge victory, 15-10. Rhodes was outstanding in the fifth set, hitting .304 with nine kills to only two errors. Bishop had three kills in the final set while Williams, Platt, and Perlis all had two each.
All three major offensive players for the Lynx all hit above .200 in the match with Bishop at .217, Williams at .250, and Platt at .241. Freshman
Ana McMullen had an excellent day with 37 assists in the contest while freshman
Arati Joshi added nine.
Defensively, senior
Maraia Tremarelli had 25 digs while McMullen and Platt each added 12 in the contest. Freshman
Morgan Hill had three blocks while Perlis and Bishop each added two. Perlis also had five service aces in the match while Bishop added three.
Rhodes will hit the road next weekend as they travel to Jackson, Miss. for a rematch against Millsaps College. The Majors were able to defeat Rhodes in straight sets two weekend ago. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
