Men's Soccer Extends Season with Upset Win Over BSC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Senior Alec Rhodes scored off a throw in from sophomore Mark Robinson to score the only goal of the game in the first half while the Rhodes defense pitched a shutout in a 1-0 road victory over Birmingham-Southern in the first round of the Southern Athletic Association Championship.

Rhodes' goal was his third of the season and came in the 39th minute. The Lynx were in complete control throughout the first half, outshooting the home-standing Panthers, 9-4, while holding a 5-2 lead in corner kicks. That would continue into the second half as Rhodes held a 10-7 advantage in shots as well as a 2-1 lead in corners.

Along with the likes of Paul Burdette, Will Porter, George Winfrey, and Joel Sabio, the Lynx got a terrific outing from their starting goalkeeper, senior Riley Sheen, who finished with seven saves on the evening while earning a shutout in the process.

Offensively, sophomore Matt McKeand led the attack with four shots followed by three from junior Evan Wladis. Burdette, Sabio, Robinson, and freshman Richard Lucarelli all added two shots in the game as well.

Rhodes moves to 7-5-4 overall with the win.

Later in the day, Sewanee pulled a huge upset, defeating top-seeded Oglethorpe in PKs. With the loss, and a win by second-seeded Millsaps, the semifinals of the SAA Championship will be in Jackson, Miss. The Lynx will take on eight-seeded Sewanee on Friday on the campus of Millsaps College. The time in yet to be determined.
