Men's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw Against BSC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Rhodes Lynx men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon against the Birmingham-Southern Panthers, their second draw in Southern Athletic Association play so far this year.

It did not take long for the Lynx to get on the board as freshman Austin Ly was able to slip a ball in under the goalkeeper for his first career goal to take a 1-0 lead in the third minute.

The Panthers would tie the game 10 minutes later as Cody Santos earned a penalty kick, converting for for the equalizer.

It was an even first half, with Rhodes holding a slim 6-5 lead in shots over the Panthers. However, Birmingham-Southern was able to earn six corner kicks in the half.

The Lynx turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, limiting the Panthers to only one shot to Rhodes' four and also earning a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks. Despite the advantage, Rhodes could not find the go-ahead goal and the match would move into overtime.

In the first overtime, the Lynx held a 4-2 advantage in shots with three on target, and then held a 2-1 edge in the second OT. However, neither team could find the back of the net as the match ended in a draw.

Senior Samory Diaby took five shots on the afternoon including three on target while sophomore Matt McKeand added three shots. Ly, freshman Joel Sabio, and freshman Richard Lucarelli all added two shots as well. Senior goalkeeper Riley Sheen earned the start in goal, picking up four saves in the contest.

Rhodes moves to 4-3-3 on the season and 0-0-2 in SAA play. They will be back on the road this upcoming weekend, heading to Sewanee, Tenn. for a SAA match against the University of the South. First kick is set for 11 a.m.
