SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Rhodes College volleyball team closed the 2015 regular season on Sunday afternoon with a four set win over the Univeristy of the South to clinch the No. 6 seed at the Southern Athletic Association Tournament in two weeks.
Rhodes goes to 12-15 overall, including three wins in their last four contests, and a 5-9 record in conference play. Rhodes hit .291 as a team including 70 team kills to only 22 errors. Defensively, they held the Tigers to a .136 hitting percentage with 45 kills and 22 errors.
The first set was quite the back-and-forth battle between the two rivals. The Lynx would erase a 24-22 deficit to extend the set, but ultimately, Sewanee would take the set, 31-29, finishing with 19 kills to only six errors and a .260 hitting percentage. Rhodes, meanwhile, was excellent in the set as well with 22 kills and eight errors and a .255 hitting percentage.
The next three sets would be all Lynx, holding Sewanee under .100 in hitting percentage and hitting over .250 in two of the three sets. Rhodes would win set two, 25-21, and set three, 25-14, behind a pair of 15 kill efforts from the team. The Lynx would clinch the match with a blistering .485 hitting percentage in the fourth set including 18 kills and only two errors to win, 25-12.
Three Lynx finished with double digit kills led by freshman
August Bishop with 20, freshman
Ellen Platt with 17, and sophomore
Elasha Williams wtih 14. Freshman
Ana McMullen was also terrific, going for 54 assists in the contest.
Defensively, Platt led the way with 15 digs followed by McMullen with 14 and senior
Maraia Tremarelli with 14. Freshman
Mackenzie Capetillo added 11 digs while junior
Catherine Grimes had 10 digs. Freshman
Lulu Schulz led all blockers with three in the contest.
Rhodes will welcome in their alumni this upcoming weekend for their Alumni Match scheduled for Saturday. The next contest will be in Conway, Ark. on Friday, November 6th at the SAA Tournament. Rhodes has clinched the No. 6 seed and will take on No. 3 Berry. The two teams have met twice this year, splitting their two contests. Start time has not been determined as of yet.
