MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Rhodes College field hockey team closed their home season on Saturday afternoon, defeating their rivals, the Sewanee Tigers, 6-1, and finishing the year 4-2 at Mason Field in 2015.
The Lynx move to 11-5 overall and 5-1 in Southern Athletic Association play.
Rhodes got the scoring going first as senior
Evy Royther found fellow senior
Julie Hertzman who scored her first goal of the season to give the Lynx a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the contest. Three minutes later, the Lynx made it 2-0 as Royther scored her 11th goal of the year.
Sewanee would answer with a goal of their own with less than 20 minutes remaining in the half, but Rhodes would fire back a minute later as junior
Grace Whelan found sophomore
Georgie Wilkins to push the lead back over two.
Rhodes would take that 3-1 lead into the break, outshooting the Tigers 7-4 and holding a 2-0 advantage in corners.
The Lynx would double up their first half total in the second half thanks to goals from Royther, senior
Mary Rose Hazel, and junior
Kennedy Brislin. Rhodes was dominant in teh second half, outshooting the Tigers, 8-1, and holding a 4-2 lead in corners.
Royther led the attack with four shots in the match while junior
Christina DiFelice added three shots and junior
Mackenzie Busby had two. Sophomore goalkeeper
Laura Eckelkamp had three saves in the contest.
Rhodes will be back in action a week from today as they travel to Danville, Ky. for a huge SAA matchup with undefeated Centre College. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. ET.
